Embracing Secondhand September

Article kindly submitted by guest contributer, Emma

Hello. I am Emma, and I am a keen thrifter who loves little more than a wander and browse around charity and antique shops. I have recently become aware of a challenge – “Second Hand September” – where, as the name might suggest, followers live a second hand lifestyle for the month of September. That is to say, we will buy no brand new goods and we will be considerate over what we do buy.

As I type this, I am on day number 2. It is going well so far (as you would expect, with it only being day number 1!!), and I will provide an update at the end of September.

How do I plan to carry out this challenge? Well, first off, I will consider the contents of my wardrobe. What in there do I not wear? Can I incorporate it into my wardrobe in ways I’ve never tried before? If not, would any of my friends be interested in it? Perhaps a clothes swap? Yes, that does sound like a good idea! Right, pals, let’s do it .

Once I have that out of the way, I have no doubts that I will feel the need for a bit of retail therapy at some point. Do I head for the fast fashion outlets? No, I will NOT. I will, instead, head straight to the local charity shops. Give unwanted clothing etc a new life. Grab a few bargains. Realise that I am now no longer contributing to the large percentage of clothing that is already unused. Liberating!! What’s not to like here?

So, if you aren’t already, please do consider a Second Hand September (One Earth October…a No Buy November?!). You won’t be sorry!!
