How to embrace the Wicked trend sustainably

With the release of Wicked: For Good fast approaching, everyone’s getting in on the Emerald City aesthetic. From glittery gowns to pastel accessories, this is one trend that’s hard to miss.

But while it’s easy to be swept up in the magic, it’s worth asking: how do we follow a trend without letting it control our shopping habits?

Following trends the sustainable way
Trends themselves aren’t the villain, it’s how we chase them that matters. The trick is to enjoy what’s new and exciting while making choices that still align with your values. That means shopping secondhand first, reworking what you already own, and only buying into a trend if you know you’ll love and wear it long after the hype fades.

Recently, secondhand fashion content creators Penny and Hannah were invited by Barnardo’s to the Wicked: For Good European premiere in London. Both arrived on the yellow brick road in head-to-toe secondhand looks, proving how easy it is to show up sustainably even for major events.

Penny wore a charity-shopped dress and shoes and a bag from Vinted. Hannah re-wore a dress from Thrift+, alongside a charity-shopped bag and shoes. Despite receiving the invite at the very last minute, they skipped the fast-fashion panic, and showcased that secondhand is never second best.

Barnardo’s x Wicked: For Good
Barnardo’s are the official charity partner of Wicked: For Good, and while most of us know and love them for their charity shops, their partnership with the film goes deeper than secondhand fashion. Together, they’re working to empower children and young people to feel like they belong, helping them to find their own magic. Because when young people have the confidence to embrace who they are, they can truly defy gravity.

Wicked-vibe finds on Oxfam Online Shop

We also browsed the Oxfam Online Shop for pieces that fit the Wicked aesthetic. From emerald greens to Glinda pinks, there are plenty of preloved gems that tap into the trend without buying new.

How to bring a little Wicked into your wardrobe (the sustainable way)

Here’s how we can tap into the trend without losing sight of our values:

  • Shop secondhand first.
Charity shops are bursting with on-trend colours and standout pieces waiting to be rediscovered. With party season in full swing, the rails are sparkling right now.
  • Buy what you truly love.
If it’s not something you’ll still want in six months, it’s probably not worth taking home.
  • Rework what you already own.
A little creativity goes a long way. From fabric dye to simple embellishments, there’s an upcycle for every skill level.
  • Borrow like a pro.
A quick rummage through friends’ and family wardrobes can work wonders. You never know what gems are hiding in there.

A trend worth keeping

Fashion can be fun, expressive, and still kind to people and planet. The Wicked trend is a reminder that we can embrace what’s current in a way that lasts. Our fashion choices can have real impact and be, quite literally, for good.
